A Walk in the Woods
and along the Burnley Way

This annual Walk in the Woods celebrates the work that has been done to create the Forest of Burnley. Over the last 10 years over one million trees have been planted and an urban arboretum of three thousand trees has been established for future generations to enjoy.

The walk takes you through Towneley’s old and new woodlands – including past the oldest tree in Burnley. Going along the Burnley Way to Barcroft, the walk continues past the area known locally as the Fireman’s Helmet to Thievely with its stunning views across into Yorkshire where you will see Stoodley Pike in the distance. The return route takes you back via Easden Clough and Walk Mill and then down into Towneley Park.

Bluebells, wood anenome and wild garlic should all be in bloom at this time of the year and bird watchers may see raven and peregrine falcon along the route; there is even the chance of glimpsing the white fallow deer with its magical and ghostly associations with Towneley family.

This walk is suitable for fit and experienced walkers, please be aware of the conditions and wear stout boots and warm, waterproof clothing, bring plenty of fluids and a packed lunch with you.

Keith Wilson is the Forest of Burnley woodlands officer, an experienced walker; Keith leads several guided walks in Burnley throughout the year.
